Uganda Martyrs Church Namugongo

The Basilica of Uganda Martyrs, Namugongo is a Roman catholic church dedicated to the Uganda Martyrs. The basilica is located at Namugongo, Kira Municipality, wakiso district with in central Uganda. Namugongo is located 14 kilometers by road, northeast of the central business district of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and the largest city in East African country. The Namugongo shrines were the first recognized by the late Joshua Serufusa zake (1884, 24 June 1985) when he was the sabaddu of Kira sub country. He constructed the structure site, where it appears shrines were built later for prayer. His interest in Christianity was improved by his father’s participation in the wars that brought Christianity to Uganda.

Martyr’s Day is a national public holiday in Uganda on June 3rd. The day commemorates the 45 martyrs, both Catholics and Anglicans, who were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga 11, then king of Buganda between 1885 and 1887. Just from the start of his regime in 1884, king Mwanga had viewed foreign missionaries as the greatest threat to his kingdom and power base. He decided to expel the missionaries and threatened converts to renounce their new faith or face executions. There were 23 Anglican and 22 catholic converts to Christianity and were killed between 31st 1885 and January 27th 1886, 32 young men were burned to death at Namugongo for their refusal to renounce Christianity. They were a combination of Anglican and catholic converts.

Mwnga’s actions led to a British backed revolution which overthrew the king in 1888. Mwanga negotiated with the British and in exchange for handling over some of his sovereignty to the British East African Company. There are Anglicans and Catholic shrines to the Martyrs close to each other in Namugongo. Each year Martyrs Day attracts millions of Pilgrims to the area with many coming from beyond Uganda.

Bahai Temple

The Bahai House of Worship is called the Mashriqul- Adhkar which is a Persian translation for the dawning place of the praise of God. It’s the mother temple of Africa built about 50 years ago on Kikaya Hill, four miles from Kampala on Gayaza Road, the Bahai temple soars above every other land scape. The temple is perched on the hill’s crest, blends with the scenic views that show harmony and joy. The exuberant flowerbeds are spread out to form columns of gardens that widen from top to the foothills. This is a constant reminder of the announced Christian imagery of the narrow path to heaven’s gate. Each continent has got only one Bahai temple and the decision to locate it here turned Uganda into Africa’s spiritual heart for the Bahai.

The gardens are also open to all and while there, the Bahai principles must be observed, the loud music, immoral Behaviour, drinking of alcohol, picking of flowers, and use of intoxicating drugs are all forbidden. Baha’ullah, the founder of Bahai faith wrote against them. Many tourists on holiday come to picnic, lounge and gracefully wander through the peaceful gardens for long hours, the tourists return as if seeking spiritual refuge from this great world marred by inhuman antics like savagery, prejudice, hatred, jealousy and many more.

After four dedicated years of building, this venerated symbol of faith was opened to the public on January 1962. Evening time invites the delightful songs of the birds charming the lounging tourists and visitors in the gardens. The birds sweetly sing proclaiming the glorious destiny that awaits the human race.
